Pirate Skillpath (Help Wanted)
Well, I trained the skills for the destroyer fitting I was recommended for Hulkageddon. At that point, I was over a week until the event so I started training up my electronic skills I figure I would need for solo ganking, as well as some engineering skills to allow more stuff on my ships.
But I’ve come to a bit of a crossroads. I want to utilize the 50% training time to knock out some of the ship skills I’ll need to fly more advanced ships. I’m nearly sure I want to go the Caldari route because I like missiles. The Flycather, an interdictor, would seem logical. But I have no idea how well that would do in PvP. It seems like it would eat up frigates with the six missile hardpoints. On the way there, I could fly the Crow, and interceptor with three missile hardpoints.
The other route I’m thinking about is training to heavy interdictors. Battlecruisers would be the stop in between and the Caldari have no shortage of missile opportunities there. The Onyx seems just plain nasty. I’d be able to exercise my missile fetish bigtime with the bonuses to heavy assalt and heavy missiles. But can I see myself in a Drake while I wait on the proper skills? It just doesn’t strike me as very pirate-y.
So, I have some big questions and I need help answering them:
1. How well does the Flycather kite? Intercepters seem like natural kiters, but very light. Can interdictors kite well in 1v1?
2. Smaller ships seem too quick for a lot of the 1-3 ship gate camps I’ve encountered. How’s the battlecruiser survival rate in those situations? I’ll be roaming a lot in low sec, will the larger ships be a huge isk drain?
3. Are heavy interdictors that much more durable while operating in small gangs than interdictors?
4. Do small gangs even use interdiction spheres? I actually need this explained to me. I’m assuming that it’s only allowed in 0.0, correct?
The answer to these question, plus any other advice would be appreciated. Going inderdictor would require Caldari Frigate V, Destroyers V, Evasive Maneuvering V, and Interceptor IV. That’s a considerable amount of sidetracking compared to if I just wanted to go straight towards heavy interdictors. However, my Hulkageddon performance may be that much better if I have destroyers trained up along with small hybrid turrets, which would add to an interdictor’s firepower.
Thoughts?

Thanks for the advice. I think I’m going to concentrate on getting my engineering and weapon skills up first. I trained battle cruisers 2 which will give me a decent enough range of ships to fly so I can figure out what I enjoy while I’m leveling up the essentials.
Oh, and see you Friday for HGIII !
The Crow is one of the fastest interceptor out there. So if you want to kite, that Crow is your best bet. The Drake is actually a very good ship for PVP. Many alliances/corps do have Drake heavy fleets/roams that often require BSes or a signifincantly larger number of BCs to be called out. For solo roaming, a Drake can do pretty damn well if piloted well. They can even take down the vaunted Vagabond HAC single handedly:

Or even a Strategic cruiser:

1) Dunno if they can kite well but dics can fare well in 1v1 in general as long as the target is frigate sized or some industrial or mining ship. The premier indctor is the Minmatar Sabre with the Flycatcher in second.
2) If the BC is nano-fitted and the gate camp is total fail, a BC would have a high survival rate. With that said, like all things in Eve, it really depends on a huge variety of factors like competancy/skill of the gate camp pilots, competancy/skill of the target pilot, the ship fitttings for the gate camp ships, etc, etc.
3) They are significantly more durable than dics. HICs have a pretty strong tank which makes up for their inability to be remote repped when their disruption spheres are turned on.
The Onyx is one of the best HICs out there BTW.
4) Depends on the FC: how fast he wants to move, whether or not he wants to conduct a gate gamp, etc, etc. With that said, dics and HICs are bloody useful with small gangs if used correctly by the FC and piloted correctly.
Yes, Dics and HICs can only use their diction spheres in null sec or 0.0 space.
